Sakay Tayo
Isang Musical ng Bayanihan sa Panahon ng AI
A note on the text
Spoken scenes are written in Taglish, the way Metro Manila actually talks. Song lyrics follow the original cast recording exactly. Stage directions are in italics. Where the recording respells words for pronunciation, this script uses normal spelling: VA is said "bee-EY", the Filipino way.
Director's notes
The idea
Sakay Tayo is a jeepney ride. Everyone who is pushed off the road in Act I (the freelancer, the VA, the copywriter, the sign painter, and the jeepney driver whose old jeep is being phased out) ends up on the same jeep by the final bow. The show is not "humans versus AI." It is "people versus being treated as replaceable," and it is a comedy before it is a sermon.
The set
One unit set: a jeepney taken apart. The hood is Tita Remy's shop counter. The two long benches roll apart to become the karinderya tables, the barangay hall seating and the rooftop ledge. The roof rack becomes the rooftop. In the finale the pieces come back together, in full view of the audience, into one glowing jeep. The audience should feel the jeep being rebuilt by the same people who were taken apart.
Light and color
Act I: warm sodium-orange Manila slowly invaded by flat, cold "office white" every time an email or notification arrives. Act II: a split stage, red for the hand-made and blue for the machine-made, with the two colors fighting for the floor. Act III: gold. Everything that was split comes back as one warm light. The holographic shimmer of the jeep appears only once, at the finale.
Motifs to protect
Two short jeepney honks (beginning, Act I end, finale, epilogue). The candle (Brownout, the roof, the ghost light). A hand being held or steadied. The phrase "Kumain ka na?" Ate Luz's notebook of debts. Paolo's revision counter.
Doubling
LOLA doubles with ALING NENA. The OFFICE CHORUS doubles as the ADOPTER CHOIR, which is deliberate: the same faces that fired people later argue for the tools. CARLO can double in the ensemble but must be a clear, memorable face from Scene 5 onward.
Language
Taglish throughout, played naturally and never as a joke on itself. English shows up when characters are being "professional" or hiding. They switch to Tagalog when they mean it.
Characters
- MIKA28, freelance graphic designer from Pasig. Draws from memory: her Lola, her street. Bright soprano.
- JUN31, night-shift virtual assistant from Cainta. Asks everyone "Kumain ka na?" and never answers it himself. Lyric tenor.
- PAOLO33, copywriter and the group's self-appointed coach. First to try the new tools, counts his revisions. Warm baritone.
- TITA REMY62, sign painter of Quiapo for forty years. Hiding that her eyesight is failing. Rich alto.
- KIKO19, Gen Z video editor, grandson of Aling Nena. Fast, funny, and about to learn what his filter is made of. Rapper.
- BEA22, illustrator. Her style is being sold as an AI filter without her name on it. Rapper.
- MANG TONYO60s, jeepney driver. His thirty-year-old jeep has a phaseout notice he keeps folded in his pocket.
- ATE LUZ50s, karinderya owner. Keeps a notebook of everyone's debts and a heart bigger than her pots. Brassy mezzo.
- MA'AM GRACE40s, Jun's former client, later with OmniMuse Philippines. The one who sends the emails.
- CARLOlate 20s, the quiet one in the group chat. Disappears after Act I, returns in Act III.
- LOLAMika's grandmother, in memory. Silent until the last line of the play. Doubles with ALING NENA.
- ENSEMBLEOffice Chorus (doubling as the Adopter Choir), Purist Choir, group-chat members including KUYA JIM, vendors, ALING NENA, KAPITAN, a CLIENT, a STUDENT, and the karinderya crowd.

The curtain rises on a street waking up. A rooster crows. MANG TONYO, sixties, wipes down the hood of an old, hand-painted jeepney that has clearly been loved for thirty years. Vendors set up. A STUDENT runs for a ride.
MANG TONYO(calling out)
Quiapo! Quiapo! Sakay na, may dalawa pa sa likod!
The STUDENT jumps on. MANG TONYO taps the roof twice. He notices a folded paper tucked under his wiper, reads it, then folds it small and puts it in his shirt pocket. Nobody else sees.
