An original Taglish musical in three acts

Sakay Tayo

Isang Musical ng Bayanihan sa Panahon ng AI

Book & lyrics · Rehearsal script

A note on the text

Spoken scenes are written in Taglish, the way Metro Manila actually talks. Song lyrics follow the original cast recording exactly. Stage directions are in italics. Where the recording respells words for pronunciation, this script uses normal spelling: VA is said "bee-EY", the Filipino way.

Director's notes

The idea

Sakay Tayo is a jeepney ride. Everyone who is pushed off the road in Act I (the freelancer, the VA, the copywriter, the sign painter, and the jeepney driver whose old jeep is being phased out) ends up on the same jeep by the final bow. The show is not "humans versus AI." It is "people versus being treated as replaceable," and it is a comedy before it is a sermon.

The set

One unit set: a jeepney taken apart. The hood is Tita Remy's shop counter. The two long benches roll apart to become the karinderya tables, the barangay hall seating and the rooftop ledge. The roof rack becomes the rooftop. In the finale the pieces come back together, in full view of the audience, into one glowing jeep. The audience should feel the jeep being rebuilt by the same people who were taken apart.

Light and color

Act I: warm sodium-orange Manila slowly invaded by flat, cold "office white" every time an email or notification arrives. Act II: a split stage, red for the hand-made and blue for the machine-made, with the two colors fighting for the floor. Act III: gold. Everything that was split comes back as one warm light. The holographic shimmer of the jeep appears only once, at the finale.

Motifs to protect

Two short jeepney honks (beginning, Act I end, finale, epilogue). The candle (Brownout, the roof, the ghost light). A hand being held or steadied. The phrase "Kumain ka na?" Ate Luz's notebook of debts. Paolo's revision counter.

Doubling

LOLA doubles with ALING NENA. The OFFICE CHORUS doubles as the ADOPTER CHOIR, which is deliberate: the same faces that fired people later argue for the tools. CARLO can double in the ensemble but must be a clear, memorable face from Scene 5 onward.

Language

Taglish throughout, played naturally and never as a joke on itself. English shows up when characters are being "professional" or hiding. They switch to Tagalog when they mean it.

Set concept: the jeepney, taken apart

Characters

  • MIKA28, freelance graphic designer from Pasig. Draws from memory: her Lola, her street. Bright soprano.
  • JUN31, night-shift virtual assistant from Cainta. Asks everyone "Kumain ka na?" and never answers it himself. Lyric tenor.
  • PAOLO33, copywriter and the group's self-appointed coach. First to try the new tools, counts his revisions. Warm baritone.

  • KIKO19, Gen Z video editor, grandson of Aling Nena. Fast, funny, and about to learn what his filter is made of. Rapper.
  • BEA22, illustrator. Her style is being sold as an AI filter without her name on it. Rapper.
  • MANG TONYO60s, jeepney driver. His thirty-year-old jeep has a phaseout notice he keeps folded in his pocket.

A street corner in Metro Manila, five in the morning, with four playing areas around it: MIKA's bedroom in Pasig, JUN's tiny home office in Cainta, a café table where PAOLO works, and TITA REMY's sign shop in Quiapo.

The curtain rises on a street waking up. A rooster crows. MANG TONYO, sixties, wipes down the hood of an old, hand-painted jeepney that has clearly been loved for thirty years. Vendors set up. A STUDENT runs for a ride.

MANG TONYO(calling out)

Quiapo! Quiapo! Sakay na, may dalawa pa sa likod!

The STUDENT jumps on. MANG TONYO taps the roof twice. He notices a folded paper tucked under his wiper, reads it, then folds it small and puts it in his shirt pocket. Nobody else sees.

MIKA sits cross-legged on her bed with her laptop on a pillow and an electric fan aimed straight at it.

MIKA(to the laptop)

Sige na. Huwag kang mag-overheat ngayon. May logo pa tayo para sa milk tea.

Her phone buzzes. A chat bubble appears above her: "Jun: kumain ka na?"

MIKA(typing, smiling despite herself)

Hindi pa. Ikaw?

Across the stage, JUN pulls off his headset. Behind him, the sun is coming up.

JUN

Good morning, Ma'am Grace. Done na po lahat ng tasks. Na-reschedule ko na rin po 'yung flight ng anak n'yo. (He yawns.) Good night naman sa'kin.

MA'AM GRACE(voice only, bright, American-accented corporate warmth)

You're a lifesaver, Jun. Seriously. What would we do without you?

JUN smiles. He believes her.

PAOLO types at the café, stops, deletes, types again. A small digital counter on his laptop lid lights up: REVISION 9.

PAOLO

"Linis na linis." Hindi. "Linis na linis, parang..." (The counter clicks to 10.) Ayan na. Revision number ten. Magtatayo na ako ng altar para sa kliyenteng 'to.

In Quiapo, TITA REMY dips a brush and paints a perfect curve of a letter. She holds the board close to her face, closer than she should. She squints, then moves it back as if nothing happened.

TITA REMY

Ang letra, parang tao. Kailangan mong hintayin bago mo madaliin.

The street fills. Phones buzz, kettles whistle, the jeep honks twice. The ENSEMBLE turns the morning into a song.

One by one, everyone climbs aboard: Mika and Jun holding hands, Paolo, Kiko, Bea, Ate Luz with an empty notebook, Aling Nena, Kapitan, Kuya Jim, and Carlo, now with his lanyard off. The last seat is empty. Everyone looks at it. MA'AM GRACE appears at the edge of the stage, uncertain, in plain clothes. JUN looks at her for a long moment, then shifts over to make room. She climbs on. TITA REMY climbs on last. The jeep's lights blaze, and it only moves when the last seat is filled. Golden confetti falls.

CURTAIN

EXIT MUSIC

Curtain call.

A ticket stub from the show

The company bows in front of the jeepney. Lead bows in this order: Carlo, Ma'am Grace, Mang Tonyo, Ate Luz, Bea and Kiko together, Paolo, Tita Remy, then Mika and Jun. The house lights come up while the orchestra plays the audience out.

♪ No. 21 · EXIT MEDLEY

Stage still · No. 21

(Instrumental. The full pit orchestra plays the audience out with every theme from the show, ending on a big final chord.)

EPILOGUE

The empty theatre, later that night.

The stage is bare. A single ghost light stands center stage. A soft piano plays the finale melody like a lullaby. Crickets.

♪ No. 22 · LIGHTS OUT

Stage still · No. 22

(Instrumental. A slow solo piano lullaby of the finale melody with celesta, low strings, crickets and a distant jeepney fading into silence.)

LOLA walks in from the wings, the same Lola from Mika's memory, with her sewing basket. She sits beside the ghost light and finishes the stitch she was making in Act I, then bites off the thread. For the first and only time, she speaks, to no one, to everyone.

LOLA

Ayan. Tapos na.

She looks out at the empty house and smiles. She lifts the finished cloth: it's a small jeepney flag, the kind that hangs from a rear-view mirror. Far away, a jeepney honks twice and drives off into the Manila night. Lola turns off the ghost light.
